Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography was founded in 1959 on the basis of the archaeological department and ethnographic group of the History Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. In 1961, the department of folklore was transferred from the Institute of Literature to the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography, and in 1973, an anthropological laboratory was established. At the institute, research works are currently being carried out in the fields of Armenian archeology, Armenian ethnography, Armenian folk folklore, anthropology. Archaeological excavations, collection of ethnographic, folklore and other materials through expeditions in Armenia play an important role in the activities of the Institute.
